| Writer, born in Lisbon, Portugal. He studied medicine, then began training for the priesthood, but took to writing. His works include such Gothic romances as Mysterios de Lisboa (1854, The Mysteries of Lisbon), Vingança (1858, Revenge), and his best-known book, Amor de Perdição (1862, Fatal Love). In 1885 he was created viscount for his services to literature. |
