| biography:
| Poet, born on l'Ile Bourbon, France. A seminarist, he chose first a military career, then turned to literature. He published ‘L'Almanach des Muses’ in 1777, the year he returned to his native island where he would sing of Léonore, a love thwarted by his brother. His major work, Poésies Erotiques, dates from 1778. Later works include poems in prose, Chansons Madécasses (1787). La Guerre des Dieux (1799) is a licentious parody of the Bible, presented as a philosophical work to the Academy which admitted him in 1803, when his acceptance speech was, exceptionally, read by Regnault de Saint-Jean d'Angely. Lamartine admired the grace of his libertine sensuality. |
