| French soldier, born in Aveyron, S France. He studied at St Cyr, and served in the Franco–Prussian War (1870–1). He was a member of the Conseil de Guerre in 1913 and took command of the Army of Lorraine in 1914. As commander of all French armies in France, he directed the Champagne offensive (1915), and became Joffre's chief-of-staff. |
