| biography:
| French soldier, son of the governor of Martinique, where he was born. In 1779 he married Joséphine de Tascher de la Pagerie who later became the wife of Napoleon. He became president of the Constituent Assembly in Paris in June 1791, and was given command of the army of the Rhine in 1793. During the Reign of Terror he was arrested as an aristocratic ‘suspect’ and guillotined. |
