| Secretary to the Prince de Conti, then to the king, born in Bordeaux, SW France. He sold his office in 1675, became ambassador in Constantinople (1679), and finally president of the Cour des Comptes in Bordeaux. He collaborated in the Gazette de France, but owed his fame to the masterpiece that he published as a translation Les Lettres d'une religieuse Portugaise (1669), a literary hoax only discovered in the 20th-c. |
