| Three members of a Dutch family who acquired fame: Hugo (1781–1853), politician, diplomat, and lawyer, born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was involved in the negotiations for the union of the Northern and Southern Netherlands in 1814, and was made a baron in 1822. Jacob Pieter Pompejus, Baron (1816–90), lawyer, born in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. He became an MP (1848–67), with two periods as foreign minister (1852–3, 1861). At first he supported Thorbecke's liberal policy, but turned conservative after 1864. Julius Philip Jacob Adriaan, Count (1816–94), born in Dommendange, Luxemburg. A diplomat, lawyer and politician, he became minister of foreign affairs (1860–1) and envoy in Prussia (1862–5). As foreign minister a second time (1866–8) his Luxemburg policy caused dispute between the king and government on the one hand and a parliamentary majority on the other. He was also ambassador to Russia (1869–71) and Austria (1875–83) and a member of the Council of State from 1883. |
