| biography:
| Athenian general and statesman. From an immensely wealthy family, he was reduced to becoming a vassal of Darius I of Persia, and accompanied him on his Scythian expedition (c.514). He returned to Athens in 493, and masterminded the Greek victory against the Persians at Marathon (490). He was the father of Cimon by the Thracian princess, Hegesipyle. |
