| biography:
| British marshal of the Royal Air Force, born in Taunton, Somerset, SW England, UK. He joined the army in 1893, served in India, South Africa, and West Africa, and developed an interest in aviation. He commanded the Royal Flying Corps in World War 1, helped to establish the RAF (1918), and became the first chief of air staff (1918–29). As commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police (1931–5), he founded the police college at Hendon. He became a peer in 1930. |
