| biography:
| British soldier and colonial administrator, born in Wrotham, Kent, SE England, UK. After serving as a soldier (1799–1820) and as an MP (1820–44), he was appointed Governor-General of India (1844–8). He offered employment to educated locals, and attempted to end the practices of suttee and infanticide. He prepared plans for a railway system, and commenced construction of the Ganges canal. During the 1st Sikh War he was second-in-command to Lord Gough, and negotiated the Peace of Lahore (1845). Returning to England he was created viscount, and succeeded Wellington as commander-in-chief (1852), establishing training camps and purchasing improved weapons. He was demoted to field marshal in 1855 during the Crimean War for the poor quality of his commanders. |
