| biography:
| Explorer of North America, born in Rouen, NW France. He settled as a trader near Montreal, and descended the Ohio and Mississippi to the sea (1682), claiming Louisiana for France and naming it after Louis XIV. In 1684 he led an expedition to the Gulf of Mexico, but spent two fruitless years looking for the Mississippi Delta. His followers mutinied, and he was murdered. |
