| Actor and playwright, born in Fontainbleau, NC France. One of the most popular dramatists before the Revolution, he created the comedy of manners in the French theatre. He played comic roles in the Comédie Française (1685–1718) and wrote many plays which were satires of contemporary manners. His best-known work is Le Chevalier à la mode (1687), about a fortune hunter's simultaneous courtship of three women. |
