| biography:
| Dutch politician and lawyer, born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. He worked at the ministry of internal affairs (1825–38), then became director of the king's cabinet (1941–54), exercising a moderating influence on King William III. In 1854–7 he was minister of reformed religion, and until 1858 of internal affairs. He was involved in the School Funding Controversy (Schoolstrijd) and responsible for the Primary Education Act of 1857. |
