| biography:
| Philosopher, born in London, UK, the grandson of the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury. He studied in London and Winchester, and entered parliament in 1695, but ill health drove him from politics to literature. He is best known for his essays, collected as Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times (1711). He was one of the leading English deists, with a considerable influence in Europe. He succeeded to the earldom in 1699, and in 1711 moved to Naples. |
