| biography:
| French noblewoman, born in Rome, Italy, the daughter of Jean de Vivonne, marquis de Pisani. At the age of 12 she was married to the son of the Marquis de Rambouillet, who succeeded to the title in 1611. She retired from court life in 1608 and began to receive at her house the intellectuals of Paris. Her literary salon was the first of its kind, and was soon imitated throughout France and other capitals in the Western world. Her circle included Mme de Sévigné, Mme de La Fayette, Corneille, Richelieu, Malherbe, and La Rochefoucauld. Her salon was much ridiculed by Molière, notably in his satirical comedy, Les Précieuses ridicules (1655). |
