| biography:
| French soldier and diplomat, born in Paris, France. He joined the army in 1798, served in the navy and cavalry, was wounded in 1809, and in the same year was appointed Napoleon's chamberlain. He was promoted general in 1811, becoming Napoleon's aide-de-camp at Waterloo (1815). He accompanied him to St Helena, and published memoirs dictated by him (8 vols, 1822–5). Condemned in 1840 to 20 years' imprisonment for helping Louis Napoleon's attempted seizure of power, he was liberated in 1848. |
