| French statesman, and secretary of state for war under Louis XIV, born in Paris, France. He proved an energetic minister in the War of Devolution (1668), reforming and strengthening the army. His work bore fruit in the Dutch War, ending with the Peace of Nijmegen (1678). He was recognized as a brilliant administrator and the king's most influential minister in the years 1683–91. |
