name: Spinola, Ambrogio di Filippo, marqués de (Marquess of) Los Balbases

pronunciation: [spinohla], Ital [spee

sex: male
lived: (1569–1630)

biography: Soldier in Spanish service, born in Genoa, NW Italy. In 1602 he raised and maintained at his own cost 9000 troops, and served against Maurice of Nassau in the Spanish Netherlands. In 1603 he besieged Ostend, which fell in 1604 after one year's siege. Early in the Thirty Years' War (1618–48) he was in Germany, subduing the Lower Palatinate, but he was recalled to Holland to fight once more against Maurice of Nassau, who died of fever while attempting to relieve Breda. Breda fell to Spinola in 1625, but soon afterwards he was forced to resign through ill health.
