| biography:
| Italian statesman, painter, and writer, born in Turin, NW Italy. A son-in-law of Manzoni, he studied painting in Rome, and wrote political novels. He took a leading part in the Risorgimento and the 1848 revolution, and as prime minister of Sardinia (1848–52) he reorganized the army, curbed the privileges of the clergy, and improved economic development. He opposed the annexation of the South. |
