| biography:
| Galician playwright and poet. He studied at Salamanca and, under his pseudonym, introduced classical Greek tragedy into Castilian with ‘Nise lastimosa’ and ‘Nise laureada’ published together as Primeras tragedias españolas (1577) on the Portuguese theme of Inés de Castro. The first was a mere adaptation of the Portuguese tragedy Inés de Castro (written by Antonio Ferreira between 1553 and 1567), but the second is an original work by Bermúdez, who has less inspiration than Ferreira, and who inserts rhetorical passages more reminiscent of Seneca than Euripides. |
