| biography:
| Dutch colonial statesman and lawyer, born in Groningen, N Netherlands. He joined the diplomatic service in 1915, was Queen's Commissioner in Groningen (1925–33), envoy to Brussels (1933–6), and the last governor-general in the Netherlands East Indies (from 1936). From March 1942 until late 1945 he was a prisoner-of-war under the Japanese. He resigned in 1945, thinking the government acted too weakly towards Indonesian terrorists, and became ambassador in Paris until 1948, and Dutch representative in NATO (1950–6). After his retirement he settled a long-standing argument on canal links with Belgium in negotiations during 1963–6. With Gerbrandy and Beel he formed an advisory committee on the Greet Hofmans affair. |
