| biography:
| Commander of the Spanish Armada, and captain-general of Andalusia, born in Sanlúcar, SW Spain. A distinguished administrator with a good record in conquest of Portugal, he was appointed to command the Great Armada in the Enterprise of England on the death of the Marquis of Santa Cruz (1588). After successfully navigating the Armada up the English Channel to rendezvous with Parma off the Dutch coast, he was thwarted by the latter's failure to break out, by the action of the English fleet, and by adverse weather conditions. He returned to Spain around the N of Britain, and continued in royal service to the Spanish Navy. |
