| biography:
| Mistress of Louis XIV, born in Tours, WC France. Brought to court by her mother, she became the king's mistress in 1661 and bore him four children. When the Marquise de Montespan superseded her, she was publicly humiliated, then compensated by being made a duchess (1667). After one escape attempt, she retired to a Carmelite nunnery in Paris (1674), where she lived in penitence for 36 years. |
