| biography:
| Niece of Louis XIII, born in Paris, France. She inherited a huge fortune from her mother, but was thwarted in her desire to marry Louis XIV or Ferdinand III. She supported her father, Gaston de France, duc d'Orléans, and Condé in the revolt of the Fronde (1651–2), where she commanded an army that occupied Orléans and later the Bastille. After a period in disgrace she returned to the court and secretly married the Comte de Lauzun (c.1681), a captain in the king's bodyguard. The marriage was unhappy, and they separated in 1684. She published her memoirs, and two novellas, and her last years were spent in religious duties. |
