| biography:
| French marshal under Louis XIV, born in Moulins, C France. He fought in the third Dutch War (1672–8), and in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–13) inflicted heavy losses on Marlborough at Malplaquet (1709). In 1711 he headed the last army France could raise, and defeated the British and Dutch at Denain (1712). He later became the principal adviser on military affairs, and fought again in his 80s at the outbreak of the War of the Polish Succession (1733–8). |
