| biography:
| French general, born in Paris, France, the great-grandson of Henry IV. He fought in the Dutch campaign of 1672, and in the War of the League of Augsburg (1689–97). He commanded in Italy and Flanders during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–13), was victorious at Cassano (1705) and Calcinato (1706), but was defeated at Oudenaarde by Marlborough (1708), and recalled after the loss of Lille. Sent to Spain in 1710 to aid Philip V, he recaptured Madrid, and defeated the English at Brihuega and the Austrians at Villaviciosa. |
