| biography:
| Huguenot soldier, financier, and statesman who became Henry IV's chief minister, born in Rosny, NC France. He fought in the later stages of the Wars of Religion (1574–98) and was wounded at Ivry (1590). Instrumental in arranging Henry's marriage to Marie de Médicis (1600), he became the king's trusted counsellor. His major achievement was the restoration of the economy after the civil wars. In 1606 he was created duke, but after Henry's assassination (1610) was forced to retire to his estates. |
