| biography:
| Nobleman, born in Paris, France, believed to be the illegitimate son of Queen Hortense and the Comte de Flahaut, and so half-brother to Napoleon III. Adopted by the Comte de Morny, he served in Algeria, but soon left the army, and in 1838 became a manufacturer of beet sugar, making his fortune with that and other speculations. Chosen a deputy in 1842, he quickly became prominent in financial questions. After 1848 he supported Louis Napoleon, took a leading part in the coup, and became minister of the interior. He later became president of the corps législatif (1854–65), and was ambassador to Russia (1856–7). |
