| Marshal and second president of the Third Republic (1873–9), born in Sully, C France. He was a commander in the Crimean War (1854–6), and for his services in the Italian campaign (1859) was made marshal and a duke. In the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1) he was defeated at Wörth, and surrendered at Sedan. After the war he suppressed the Commune (1871), and succeeded Thiers as president. Failing to assume dictatorial powers, he resigned in 1879, thus ensuring the supremacy of parliament. |
