| French soldier, born in Paris, France. He achieved rapid promotion under Napoleon in Italy, where he fought with distinction at Lodi and Castiglione (1796). He opposed Napoleon's assumption of power as first consul in 1799, but was reconciled and promoted marshal in 1804 and created Duke of Castiglione in 1808. |
