| biography:
| French statesman and soldier, born in Villefranche, EC France. After serving in many wars, he became a Marshal of France in 1741. In the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–8) he stormed Prague in 1742, then led the skilful retreat to Eger. He raised the siege of Genoa (1747), and drove the Austrians into Lombardy before the war ended. During the Seven Years' War he was minister for war (1758–60). |
