| French politician, born in Le Pellerin, near Nantes, W France. He renounced his membership of the Oratorians at the Revolution and became a Jacobin and member of the Convention in 1792. An enthusiastic proponent of de-Christianization, and a consummate intriguer, he served as minister of police (1799–1815).
