| biography:
| Bourbon prince, born in Saint-Cloud, NC France, the cousin of Louis XVI and father of Louis Philippe. He became the Duc de Chartres in 1752, and inherited his father's title in 1785. At the Revolution he proved a strong supporter of the Third Estate against the privileged orders, and in 1792 renounced his title of nobility for his popular name. At the Convention he voted for the king's death, but was himself arrested, after the defection of his eldest son to the Austrians (1793), and guillotined. |
