| biography:
| French soldier and aristocrat, the eldest son of Charles X of France, born in Versailles, France. He fled from France with his father after the revolution of 1789, and in 1799 married his cousin, Marie Thérèse Charlotte (1778–1851), the only daughter of Louis XVI. After the Restoration in 1814 he made a feeble effort to oppose Napoleon on his return from Elba. In 1823 he led the French army of invasion into Spain to restore Ferdinand VII (r.1808–33) to his throne. After the July revolution in 1830, he renounced his claim to the throne, and accompanied his father into exile. |
