| biography:
| Napoleonic general, born in Lyon, SC France. Destined to follow his father in silk manufacturing, his exceptional military talents became apparent when he was a volunteer in the national guard. After serving at Toulon (1793), Tirol (1797), and Switzerland (1797–8), he played a major role in Napoleon's successful crossing of the Alps (1800), defeated the British (1809–10), and conquered Valencia (1812), which gave him his title. Made a peer by Louis XVIII, he was deprived of his title in 1815 because of his support of Napoleon during the Hundred Days. |
