| biography:
| Sculptor, one of the most important artists of the early Renaissance, born in Florence, NC Italy. He was recorded as a member of the Stonemasons' Guild in 1405, and was working with his father shortly thereafter on the Porta della Mandorla of Florence cathedral. He contributed statues to three of the niches on the guild hall Orsanmichele; his best work here was the group of ‘Four Crowned Saints’, which shows strong classical influence. However, in his most important later commission, the relief of the ‘Assumption of the Virgin’ above the Porta della Mandorla (1414–21), he returned to a more Gothic manner. |
