| biography:
| Fabulist, born in Extremadura, W Spain. He studied at Alcalá University. Imitating La Fontaine and Iriarte, he attacked tyranny and bad government in fables such as ‘La piedra de anular y el cuchillo’ and ‘La escalera de mano y el farolero’. He published these and other poems in Lira de la libertad (1831) after being exiled for his involvement in a conspiracy against the French. He contributed to the Memorial literario (1784–1808) in its third phase, 1800–8. |
