| biography:
| Writer and diplomat, born near Mantua, N Italy. He studied at Milan, began a career at court, and in 1505 was sent by the Duke of Urbino as envoy to Henry VII of England, who made him a knight. His chief work, Il cortegiano (1528, The Courtier), is a manual for courtiers. He also wrote Italian and Latin poems, and many letters illustrating political and literary history. |
