| biography:
| Italian politician, born in Livorno, W Italy, the son-in-law of Mussolini. A leading Fascist, he became minister of propaganda (1935) and of foreign affairs (1936–43), supporting his father-in-law's expansionist and war policy. He was nevertheless unenthusiastic about Mussolini's alliance with Germany, and from 1942 openly opposed it. Having participated in Mussolini's deposition (Jul 1943), in 1944 he was put on trial by Mussolini's supporters, and shot. |
