| Novelist, born in La Coruña, NW Spain. The centre of a literary controversy in Spain when she championed Naturalism, her first novel was Pascual Lopez (1879). Her best-known works include Los pazos de Ulloa (1886, trans The Son of a Bondswoman), and La madre naturaleza (1887, Mother Nature). An ardent feminist, she also wrote plays, short stories, and literary criticism, and became professor of Romance literature at Madrid from 1916. |
