| biography:
| French political theorist and clergyman, born in Fréjus, SE France. His pamphlet, Qu'est-ce que le tiers-état? (1789, What is the Third Estate?) stimulated bourgeois awareness and won him great popularity. He became a member of the National Convention, and later served on the Committee of Public Safety (1795) and in the Directory. In 1799, he helped to organize the revolution of 18th Brumaire, becoming a member of the Consulate. When Napoleon assumed supreme power, his authority waned, and he withdrew to his estates. He was exiled at the Restoration (1815), and lived in Brussels until 1830, returning after the July Revolution to Paris. |
