| biography:
| French historian and politician, born in London, UK. Educated at Fulham and the Collège Ste Barbe, in 1830 he helped Lamennais and others publish L'Avenir (The Future), a liberal newspaper, but it was condemned by the pope. In 1835 he was outspoken in defence of the liberty of the press, and in 1848 against tyranny, and after the Revolution he was elected a member of the National Assembly. His greatest work was Les Moines d'occident (7 vols, 1860–77, Monks of the West). |
