| Poet, born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He went to France as an adolescent, and published the sequence of prose poems Les Chants de Maldoror (1868, The Songs of Maldoror). Poésies was published in 1870, the year he died in Paris. His work was a significant influence on the Surrealists and other Modernist writers. |
