| biography:
| Navigator, born near Albi, S France. He distinguished himself in the naval war against Britain (1778–83) by destroying the forts of the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1785, in command of an expedition of discovery, he visited the NW coast of America, explored the NE coasts of Asia, and sailed through La Pérouse Strait between Sakhalin and Yezo. In 1788 he sailed from Botany Bay, but his two ships were wrecked N of the New Hebrides. |
