| biography:
| French-Canadian statesman, born in St Germain-en-Laye, NC France. He served in the army, and in 1672 was appointed governor of the French possessions in North America. He was recalled for misgovernment in 1682, but was sent out again in 1689. He extended the boundaries of New France down the Mississippi, launched attacks on New England villages, repulsed the British siege of Quebec, and broke the power of the Iroquois. |
