| biography:
| French soldier, born in Limoges, C France. He joined the Revolutionary army, and defeated the Austrians at Wattignies (1793) and Fleurus (1794), then drove the Austrians across the Rhine, took Luxembourg, and besieged Mainz. He was defeated at Höchst (1795), and four times (1796–9) by the Archduke Charles of Austria. Napoleon made him marshal (1804) and Governor of Naples (1806). He was defeated by Wellington at Vittoria (1813), and in 1814 transferred his allegiance to Louis XVIII, who made him a count. He supported the Revolution of 1830. |
