| biography:
| Military administrator and historian, born in Montpellier, S France. He entered the army at 16, was imprisoned during the Terror, but was appointed secretary of the war industry in 1800 and intendant-general in Austria and Prussia. He was minister of war from 1811, and later was ennobled by Louis XVIII. He wrote histories of Venice and of Britain. |
