| biography:
| Italian statesman, and prime minister of the Kingdom of Italy (1906, 1909–10), born in Pisa, W Italy, of an English mother. An enlightened conservative, he entered parliament in 1880, and became finance minister (1893–96). To reorganize the budget, he adopted a strict economic policy which made him unpopular. As prime minister he was unable to conciliate parliament, and as foreign minister (1914–20) denounced the Triple Alliance of Austria–Hungary, Germany, and Italy. In 1915 Italy declared war on Austria–Hungary, and in 1916 on Germany, gaining territorial rights to Trieste and Fiume (1918) and to Trentino and Istria (1919). |
