| biography:
| Civil engineer, born in Chamelet, France. He studied at the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées, and became assistant to Perronet in Paris, for whom he undertook some analyses of masonry arch bridges, and in 1805 he was appointed inspector-general of roads and bridges. He is most noted for the equations he developed dealing with the flow of water, and for the Prony brake (1821) which measures the power of an engine under test. |
