| biography:
| Second caliph of the Abbasid dynasty. He held important military commands during the struggle against the Umayyads under his brother al-Saffah, whom he succeeded in 754. An astute politician, he defeated several revolts, establishing a firm government dominated by the Abbasid family, and founding a new capital for the empire, Baghdad (762). He overcame considerable opposition to ensure the succession of his own son, Mahdi, and died while leading his fifth pilgrimage to Mecca. |
