| Conductor, born in Mumbai (Bombay), W India. Born into a musical family, he later studied music in Vienna. He became associate conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (1958), and went on to be conductor and musical director of many prestigious orchestras, notably the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1962–78) and the New York Philharmonic (1978–91). He is now the musical director (for life) of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. |
